Real or Re-Touched? Dove Makes Us Question The Images We See
May 2, 12
Dove, recently launched a creative campaign to spark a conversation around how extreme re-touching of beauty images can go unnoticed and can distort a woman’s perception of beauty – especially young girls. This print and interactive campaign continues the work of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty launched in 2004, which first highlighted the issue of digital alteration of beauty images through its Evolution of Beauty video; if you haven’t seen it – it’s a definite must-watch.
Take a look at the image below; is it Real or Re-touched?
Now, look at the image when it’s turned right side up:
Crazy isn’t it? How, at first glance a clearly manipulated image can appear perfectly normal. No wonder so many women and young girls are unhappy with how they look.
The copy (above – top right) reads: Does retouching distort your perception of beauty?
What do you think? Have you ever been influenced by an image or representation of beauty in an advertisement or the media? Do you feel differently about the way you look when you see beauty images?
Despite increased attention being paid to the use of retouching in beauty photos, its effects are still being felt. The Real Truth About Beauty Research conducted by Dove found that only 9% of Canadian girls (10-17) and only 3% of women are comfortable calling themselves beautiful. Would you call yourself beautiful?
“Dove believes that every woman should have a positive relationship with beauty. That is why we have made the commitment not to distort any of our images to create an unrealistic or unattainable view of beauty” says Sharon MacLeod Dove V.P. of Marketing. “Dove only casts real women in its advertising campaigns. We believe our images continue to demonstrate that real beauty comes in many shapes, sizes, colours and ages.”
Women and young girls are encouraged to explore the resources at www.Dove.ca, including an interactive tutorial that helps mothers, mentors and educators engage girls in a fun exploration and discussion about beauty images. (dove.ca/harbingerideas.com)

Fresh, Radiant Skin With Bio Oil
May 1, 12
The trend towards fresh, radiant skin this summer is good news for women of all ages; whether in your 20s, 30s, 40s or 50s, you can achieve this look and get a gorgeous glow in just 5 easy steps! I recently teamed up with Bio-Oil to provide some tips on how to do just that!
Here’s how you can maintain gorgeous, glowing skin this summer:
#1: Exfoliate: In a bowl, combine honey and sugar and mix well until you get a nice paste. Then, gently massage the mixture on the face in a circular motion for about 10 seconds. Rinse off with warm water and a face cloth.
#2: Moisturize: Warm a dime-sized amount of Bio-Oil in the palm of your hands and gently press and pat into the skin. Bio-Oil can be used all over the face – including the eye area – and leaves the skin feeling super soft, but not greasy. This is a great way to prep the skin for smooth makeup application.
#3: Foundation: Less is more. Apply a light amount of foundation (or tinted moisturizer) where needed to even out the skin tone and get rid of any redness. Blend with a sponge until smooth and flawless.
#4: Blush: Use a cream blush to add a soft pop of colour. Try GOSH Natural Touch Cream Blusher ($17) in Lusty Pink. The smooth, weightless formula of this blush helps the colour blend easily into the skin. Apply with clean fingertips or a foundation brush, like the Quo Professional Dual Sided Foundation Brush ($45) to the apples of the cheeks; blend in a circular motion until the colour melts into the skin.
#5: Soft Lips: Apply a hint of gloss in pink, peach or coral to complement a glowing complexion. Try Quo Lip Temptation Gloss ($12), part of the new Quo Cosmetics 2012 summer collection. This is the perfect lip gloss for comfortable, long-wearing colour and is available in 15 tempting shades. Its sleek and chic packaging means it will travel well in any purse or clutch this summer.
From Day to Night – Statement Lips: Kick up your look for the evening with bold, vibrant lips. For intense pigment and long-lasting lip colour, try GOSH Velvet Touch Lipstick ($14) in the newest shades 151 Lady Luck and 154 Burgundy. Bright lipstick colours are extremely unforgiving and will not look their best if applied on dry chapped lips, so prep your lips prior to lipstick application with a small amount of Bio-Oil. Apply all over (with your finger or a cotton swab) till soft and smooth.
