Taking Care Of Your Hairbrush

This past weekend – I watched in horror as my brother-in-law brushed his hair with a brush that looked like it got run over by a car. And, when I mentioned to him that it’s probably time to get a new brush – he replied “really? I don’t see anything wrong mine – I’ve had it for 10 years” In which I replied “that’s the whole point!” ;)

So I reached out to Pantene’s Senior Scientist, Dr. Jeni Thomas to give us the low down on caring for your hair brush – And, here is what she had to say:

Question: When Should You Replace Your Hair Brush
Dr. Jeni Thomas:
“When you notice changes in the bristles (bent over, split, worn, etc.) or if you feel your brush is tugging more on your hair (and you don’t believe it to be your hair’s fault), it is time to trade your brush in for a new one!”

Question: Should You Clean Your hair Brush? How and How Often?
Dr. Jeni Thomas:
“Yes – hair and residue from styling products can build up in your brush, leaving your brush less effective for smoothing your hair (this may mean that you need to use more brush strokes to get the same look, and it is good for the health of your hair to keep the number of brush strokes to a minimum).

You want to first remove the entangled hair – a wide tooth comb can help to loosen and remove hair from the brush. A warm solution of shampoo and water made in your sink (a coin-size amount of shampoo diluted with a good amount of water for a lightly-soapy wash solution) – just dip the brush and shake a bit to dislodge any build-up. You can even use a toothbrush to scrub the bristles if necessary. Then rinse away the solution with warm water and dry the brush (on a towel to soak up moisture or with a blow dryer). Be careful if you are using a wooden brush that you do not leave it to soak for long – extended exposure to water can cause the wood to warp, so in this case, dip and scrub the bristles rather than soak the brush.

When you can see build-up or can feel that the bristles/pad are tacky or sticky, it is a good indication that your brush needs a cleaning.”
