As Seen On TV: Beauty Trends

March 14, 11

On my latest appearance on CBC – Steven and Chris we talked about some of the hottest Beauty Trends for Spring:  Orange & Coral Lips, Vibrant Colourful Eyeshadow and Natural Barely There Makeup.

Here is a list of the products I used as well as some quick tips to get these looks!

TREND #1:  SHADES OF ORANGE

  • Orange, Coral and Peach are some of the hottest shades right now.
  • The easiest way to wear this colour is on your lips.
  • However, when wearing such a bright bold shade – there are a few things you want to consider:
  • #1 – Exfoliate
  • Orange and Coral are shades that are extremely unforgiving and will not look good on dry chapped lips – so it is super important to exfoliate them first to create a smooth base.  And, you can do that with a toothbrush or a little bit of honey and sugar.
  • #2 – Make A Statement
  • As you can see this look is not about being subtle or shy – it’s sexy, dramatic and it’s all about the pigment.
  • So, to get the true shade of the lipstick to really show through – start by applying a little bit of foundation on your lips first to help neutralize and get rid of the natural redness in your lips – that if not concealed could easily change the colour of your lipstick.
  • #3 – Definition & Precision
  • You want to make sure your lips look nice and defined
  • Use a nude lip pencil – and line all the way around your lips first – this will create almost like a stencil – to help you stay within the lines and create that perfect shape.
  • Then, use a lip brush instead of the tube when applying your lipstick – and start from the middle of the lip working outwards.  Then, when you get to the outside edges – use small baby strokes and take your time.
  • #4 – Less Is More
  • Since this look is all about the lips – you’re going to want to keep the rest of your face makeup to a minimum.
  • So, for the eye’s – a few coats of Mascara is all you need.
  • And for Blush – choose a shade that’s in the same tonal family as your lipstick.  So for example, a peach blush would look great with an orange or coral lipstick – cause it’s in the same tonal family.
  • But, if you don’t have one that works – or you don’t want to buy a new blush – you could always use your lipstick – and use it as a cream blush.  So, all you would have to do is take a clean blush brush – run it along your lipstick – and then apply it on the apples of your cheeks.  It’s soft, subtle and looks amazing!

PRODUCTS USED:

  • Coral Lipstick:  NARS in Casablanca
  • Blush:  Chanel in Tweed Coral

TREND #2:  VIBRANT COLOURFUL EYESHADOW

  • This look is all about having fun, wearing your favourite eyeshadows and expressing your own mood and personality through colour.
  • #1 – Eyes
  • To get your eyeshadow to look bold and bright – start by applying a creamy eyeliner in the same shade as your eyeshadow, all over the lid – and along the bottom lash line.
  • Then layer the eyeshadow on top of that – to really intensify the colour.
  • #2 – Matte Lips
  • Because the eye’s are so bold – I kept everything else really natural – and I finished the look with a nice soft neutral matte lip.
  • A quick tip to make any of your lipsticks at home matte, in seconds – is to take a sponge – dip it in translucent powder and then press and pat it into your lips.

PRODUCTS USED:

  • Eyeliner:  Yves Saint Laurent #12
  • Eyeshadow:  COVERGIRL Eye Enhancers in Sombra Realzadora
  • Lipstick:  GOSH #146 in Cappuccino

TREND #3:  THE NATURAL BARELY THERE MAKEUP LOOK

  • The key to the ‘au natural’ look is a flawless base.
  • #1 – Exfoliate & Moisturize
  • So, to get that look – you’re going to want to start by exfoliating the skin first – to brighten and smooth out your complexion – followed by a good moisturizer.
  • #2 – Even Skin Tone
  • To even out the skin tone and get rid of redness – I mixed together foundation with concealer – and applied it all over – including under the eye’s and on top of the eyelids.
  • #3 – Bronzer
  • To give the skin a healthy fresh sun-kissed glow – I applied a light dusting of Bronzer everywhere.  Working from the forehead, downwards.
  • #4 – Shimmer Brick
  • Then to add radiance and luminosity to the skin – which is what this look is really all about – I used the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Beige – and I used it on the face, eye’s and lips.
  • I started by highlighting the face with a fan brush – and I applied it on the forehead, on top of the cheekbones, down the centre of the nose and chin.
  • Then, I used the gold shade as eyeshadow – and with my finger – I applied it all over the lid to give the eye’s a soft subtle pop of colour.
  • Then, lastly for the lips – I kept it really simple and finished the look with some lip balm and a little bit of shimmer down the centre of the lips to make them look full and irresistible.

PRODUCTS USED:

  • Foundation:  Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
  • Concealer:  Maybelline Mineral Power
  • Bronzer:  Laura Mercier in Dune Bronze
  • Shimmer:  Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Beige
